925 Sterling Silver to commemorate the XVII Commonwealth Games. The reverse is the work of artist and sculptor Matthew Bonaccorsi, a skilled member of the Royal Mint engraving team, whose design was the winning entry in a competition. Representing celebration, victory and sportsmanship it shows a moving figure holding aloft a banner, the top of which is divided into lines, symbolising the lanes of a running track or swimming pool. There are four versions of the coin, one for each of the participating teams from the United Kingdom. They are featured in turn, by their colour flags appearing in cameo. The obverse design is Ian Rank Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the Kings as presentation pieces. In Britain the practice of striking Piedforts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known. The box is 57 years old and in amazingly clean condition. All the seals are firmly in place, no fading, discoloration or water stains, no mildew or odors commonly found with some older boxes due to improper storage. So Called Sealed Sets are likely to have been searched. The US Mint did not seal the envelopes. The US Mint didnt bother sealing each individual envelope. They either did this to save time or so people could view the set without ruining the envelope. About 1962 Proof Sets. The maximum order for 1962 Proof Sets was limited to 100 sets. Each set contained five coins: One example each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar. About the sets: 1962 Proof Coins are found with Brilliant, Cameo and Deep Cameo surfaces. Deep Cameo Proofs are the most desirable Proofs. Since they are very scarce, these coins are highly sought out by collectors. Mintage: 3,218,019 sets. Original packaging: Each coin was sealed in its own compartment between two sheets of flat pliofilm. An octagonal, foil seal imprinted with “US MINT PHILADELPHIA” was placed in a sixth compartment, and the flat pack was then inserted into a mailing envelope with a card.
